Schwarzer Bock: in the very heart of Ansbach, not just anywhere.

Make yourself at home in the historic pedestrian quarter, just a few steps from the Margravial Residence, government offices, St Gumbertus Church, the Brückencenter shopping centre and local shops.

The Main House – hospitality with a little history

Built shortly after 1500, our main house originally accommodated horses downstairs and their travelling owners upstairs. The horses were, after all, the preferred transport of the late-medieval business traveller – which explains the wonderfully high ceilings below.

Between 1898 and 1906, a neo-Baroque façade was added to the Schwarzer Bock inn on the former fruit market, now Pfarrstrasse 31. For more history, and a tale or two, have a look at Wikipedia.

Rooms at the front overlook the historic town centre. Here, the old Chancellery may lend a little echo to the sounds of town life: the brisk click of heels on cobblestones, perhaps, or cheerful company making its way home.

The following rooms are in the main house.

Book your Air-conditioned Suites & Serviced Apartments

Our suites and serviced apartments overlook the historic Margravial Chancellery. Each has air conditioning in the main bedroom, a 2 × 2 m bed, and a kitchenette with a microwave, fridge, freezer compartment and dishwasher.

Book your Air-conditioned Double Rooms in the Main House

Our double rooms for two overlook the courtyard garden and feature a 2 × 2 m bed and air conditioning.

Rooms measure approximately 28–38 m² and are on the first floor or mezzanine, reached by 17–25 steps. There is no lift – our historic house prefers to keep you gently on your toes.

Rooms 40 and 41 can be connected to create family accommodation. Please enquire by email.

Room 28 has a small adjoining room within a historic town-wall bastion, with a fixed child’s bed suitable for a child up to approximately 12 years old, plus a cot for a child up to three. Please enquire by email if you would like to book this room for your family.

Please note: windows in all air-conditioned rooms cannot be opened.

Book your Air-conditioned Courtyard-facing Double Rooms

For those who prefer a quieter retreat, our inward-facing double rooms overlook a small light well rather than the town.

With no outward view and no windows overlooked from outside, they offer greater privacy – particularly appealing to guests who appreciate a little discretion.

These rooms accommodate two people, measure approximately 25–30 m², and feature a 2 × 2 m bed and air conditioning. They are on the first-floor mezzanine, reached by approximately 20 steps.

Please note: windows in all air-conditioned rooms cannot be opened.

Book your Chamber – our Classic Single Rooms

Our traditional Kammer (Chamber) rooms are cosy quarters for the solo traveller. All are in the main house:

  • Sattelkammer: 1.6 × 2 m bed
  • Gumbertuskammer: 1.2 × 2 m bed
  • Blaue Kammer: 1.6 × 2 m bed

These compact rooms measure approximately 8–12 m² and face the neighbouring historic aristocratic residence. As the buildings stand close together, the rooms have no outward view.

They have windows that open, but no air conditioning, and are on the first-floor mezzanine, reached by 17–22 steps.

The Garden House – a leafy little retreat

Our guest house is a short 12-metre stroll through the garden from the main building. All rooms are on the gently raised ground floor, reached by just two steps, and all have windows that open.

Climbing vines dress the building in greenery, providing summer shade and helping to keep the rooms noticeably cooler.

With such leafy surroundings, an insect or the occasional spider may wander in through an open window. Even with careful housekeeping, these little visitors cannot always be prevented. Should one overstay its welcome, please let us know.

Some sounds of town life may be audible, including traffic from nearby Residenzstrasse.

Book your Federspiel Double Rooms in the Garden House

Our Federspiel double rooms accommodate two guests and face towards the courtyard garden and the Rezat car park / Residenzstrasse side of the property.

  • Room 22: 1.8 × 2 m bed, with a low-threshold shower for easy access.
  • Room 25: 2 × 2 m bed, with a level-access shower.

Both rooms measure approximately 30 m².
